In last week’s discussion, we focused on the importance of first impressions when it comes to resumes. Today let’s expand on this topic by exploring the essential elements of effective resume content. If you are uncertain about the quality of your resume, consider asking yourself the following questions:

Is my resume relevant?

It’s a common cliché, but it’s still true:

You should always tailor your resume to the specific role you are applying for.

Unfortunately, not everyone follows this advice.

As a hiring manager, the first 5–10 seconds I spend on a resume is looking for relevancy. In a competitive job market, recruiters and hiring managers do not have the luxury of spending 5 minutes scanning a resume for relevant keywords. If the first pass is through an AI system or keyword search, and there are no matching keywords, no human will ever lay eyes on your resume.

If you truly care about the job you are applying for, make sure to highlight your relevant experience and place it prominently at the top of each section of your resume.

For those who don’t bother to do so, I can tell, and I won’t bother reading on unless there is something else that catches my eye.
